The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only novel written by Oscar Wilde and one of the defining classics of late Victorian literature. Blending Gothic atmosphere, psychological drama, philosophical reflection, and Wilde’s characteristic wit, the novel examines the conflict between outward beauty and inner morality.

Suddenly aware that his beauty will inevitably fade while the portrait will remain young forever, Dorian makes a desperate wish: he wants to remain young while the portrait grows old in his place.
His wish mysteriously becomes reality.
As the years pass, Dorian retains his flawless youthful appearance. The portrait, however, begins to change, gradually reflecting the consequences of his choices and the darker transformation taking place within him.
Hidden away from everyone, the painting becomes a disturbing record of a life that Dorian can conceal behind his beautiful appearance and respectable social position. The greater the contrast between his public image and private actions becomes, the more powerful the portrait’s hold over him grows.
Through Dorian’s transformation, Wilde explores vanity, influence, conscience, temptation, secrecy, reputation, art, youth, and personal responsibility. The novel repeatedly questions whether beauty has any relationship to goodness and whether a person can truly escape the consequences of their actions.
