The Mercy of Gods is a 2024 science fiction novel by James S.A. Corey (the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), and the first book in The Captive’s War trilogy. It marks a return to epic space opera from the creators of The Expanse, this time exploring humanity under alien conquest amid brutal interstellar conflicts.
The story begins on the human-settled planet Anjiin, where Dafyd Alkhor, a junior research assistant, is part of a scientific team studying local biology. Their lives are shattered when a technologically superior alien empire known as the Carryx invades, kills a substantial portion of the population, and abducts many of the brightest minds — including Dafyd and his colleagues — to the Carryx homeworld.
Once captured, they find themselves in a colossal alien structure alongside other species’ captives. The Carryx force them into a high-stakes contest of utility where survival depends on proving usefulness to their conquerors. Under constant pressure, the humans must navigate inter-species politics, grim ethical choices, and personal transformations while wrestling with the fate of their people and the possibility of resistance.
