About the Author
Norman Whitney
Dr. Norman Whitney (1943-2022) was an author of OUP ELT materials and editor of the English Language Teaching Journal.
He studied in the UK and the USA, before beginning a distinguished career in the world of English Language Teaching. He was Head of EFL at Ealing College of Higher Education in London and became Joint Chief Inspector of The British Council's scheme for accrediting EFL schools in the UK. From 1996 to 1999 he was a consultant with the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, with special responsibility for the design and content of teacher training programmes. He was a member of the English Speaking Union, and also worked as a consultant to a number of organisations on online teaching materials development.
He was a prolific and very successful author of OUP ELT materials. His coursebooks and readers sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and included Open Doors and Dream Team, global courses for secondary schools, English Champions for Italian secondary schools, Team up! for Greek frontisteria, and Passport to Work, a conversation course for Japanese speakers.
He was the editor of the English Language Teaching Journal (published by OUP) from 1987 to 1992.
