David Stuart Davies

David Stuart Davies, General Editor of Wordsworth’s Mystery and Supernatural series, is an editor, novelist, playwright and film historian. He is an expert on Sherlock Holmes, having written four Holmes novels, two plays exploring the darker side of the great detective and three studies of the stage, film and TV career of Arthur Conan Doyle’s character.

David Stuart Davies, General Editor of Wordsworth’s Mystery and Supernatural series, is an editor, novelist, playwright and film historian.

He is an expert on Sherlock Holmes, having written four Holmes novels Sherlock Holmes and the Hentzau Affair (1991), The Tangled Skein (1995), Shadow of the Rat (1999), and The Scroll of the Dead (1998). He has also written two plays exploring the darker side of the great detective, which premiered at Salisbury Playhouse and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, as well as three studies of the stage, film and TV career of Arthur Conan Doyle’s character. He edited Sherlock, the detective magazine, for ten years and has also contributed commentaries to DVDs of Granada TV’s Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett, the Basil Rathbone films of the 1930s and 1940s, and A Touch of Frost starring David Jason.

He is the author of the Johnny One Eye series of crime novels set in World War II. In addition, he has edited several books of selected stories, Shadows of Sherlock Holmes, Short Stories From the Nineteenth Century, Crime Scenes and Vintage Mystery and Detective Stories, as well as a volume of new Sherlock Holmes short stories, Sherlock Holmes; The Game’s Afoot.

David has given literary presentations in locations as diverse as the House of Commons, New York’s National Arts Club, the National Film Theatre and on the Queen Mary II.

David is on the committee of the Crime Writers Association and edits their monthly magazine, Red Herrings. David lives in Yorkshire.
