While still a boy, Ilyas was stolen from his parents by German colonial troops in East Africa. After years away fighting against his own people, he returns to his village to find his parents gone and his sister Afiya given away.
Hamza, too, returns from the war, scarred in body and soul, until he meets the beautiful, undaunted Afiya. Afterlives follows these intertwined lives across generations, against the brutal backdrop of Germany's colonisation of East Africa.
By Abdulrazak Gurnah, winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, Afterlives was named one of Barack Obama's favourite books of 2022. Published by Bloomsbury, 288 pages, paperback.
