A stranger named Michael Starkwedder crashes his car into a ditch in thick fog on a lonely road in South Wales. Seeking help, he stumbles into an isolated house and finds Laura Warwick standing over the body of her wheelchair-bound husband, a gun still in her hand. She confesses to the murder — and the unexpected guest, inexplicably drawn to help her, begins inventing a cover story on the spot.
But as the night wears on and more of the household is drawn into the investigation, doubts creep in. Did Laura really pull the trigger? And if not, who was she protecting — her husband's embittered young half-brother, his frail and domineering mother, her own secret lover, or the grieving father of a child killed in an accident for which the victim was responsible? Everyone in the house, it seems, had a motive.
Adapted into novel form by Charles Osborne from Agatha Christie's own stage play — one of her most acclaimed, which ran for 604 performances in the West End after opening in 1958 — THE UNEXPECTED GUEST is vintage Christie: a classic country-house mystery full of fog, secrets and misdirection.
