Jojo is thirteen years old and trying to understand what it means to be a man. His mother, Leonie, is in constant conflict with herself and those around her - black, with children's father who is white, she wants to be a better mother but struggles against her own addiction.
When the children's father is released from prison, Leonie packs her kids and a friend into her car and drives north to Parchman Farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary. There, the ghost of a dead inmate has something to teach Jojo about fathers and sons, legacies, violence and love.
Rich with Jesmyn Ward's distinctive, lyrical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing won the National Book Award 2017 and was shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2018. Published by Bloomsbury, 304 pages, paperback.
