The Pearl is a short novel by Nobel Prize-winning American author John Steinbeck, first published in 1947. Inspired by a Mexican folk tale, it tells the story of Kino, a poor pearl diver, his wife Juana and their baby Coyotito, whose lives are transformed when Kino finds a magnificent pearl - "the Pearl of the World".
Believing the pearl will bring wealth, security and a better future for his family, Kino instead discovers the greed, envy and violence it awakens in those around him. A moving parable about the illusion of wealth and the fragility of innocence.
