The Fall is a philosophical novel by Albert Camus, first published in French in 1956 as La Chute. Over several drunken nights in an Amsterdam bar, the former Parisian lawyer Jean-Baptiste Clamence confesses his story to a chance acquaintance: the slow collapse of a seemingly model, self-satisfied citizen into guilt, hypocrisy and self-loathing after he fails to act at a decisive moment. Jean-Paul Sartre called it perhaps the most beautiful and least understood of Camus's novels. This Penguin Modern Classics paperback presents Robin Buss's acclaimed English translation, one of the key texts of twentieth-century existentialist literature.
