A psychological thriller set at Cambridge University, blending Greek mythology, obsession, grief, and murder.
The Maidens is a psychological thriller by Alex Michaelides, the bestselling author of The Silent Patient. Set against the haunting backdrop of Cambridge University, the novel weaves together murder, classical mythology, and psychological obsession.
The story follows Mariana Andros, a group therapist grieving the loss of her husband, who becomes entangled in the investigation of a brutal murder involving a secretive group of young women known as The Maidens. All signs point toward Edward Fosca, a charismatic and enigmatic professor of Greek tragedy.
As Mariana digs deeper, the novel explores the power dynamics between mentors and students, the nature of trauma, and the ways grief can distort perception. Greek myths—particularly those involving cults, sacrifice, and fate—are intricately woven into the narrative, adding symbolic depth and intellectual tension.
Rather than relying solely on twists, The Maidens builds suspense through atmosphere, psychological insight, and moral ambiguity. It is a dark, elegant thriller that questions truth, memory, and the dangerous allure of idealized authority.
