On 10 June 2020, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's father, the scholar James Nwoye Adichie, died suddenly in Nigeria while the world was in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving the family unable to gather and mourn together. Notes on Grief, expanded from her widely read New Yorker essay, is Adichie's intimate meditation on that loss: thirty short, piercing sections that trace the shock, anger and tenderness of bereavement, and that also serve as a loving portrait of her father's life, from his survival of the Biafran war to his long career as a statistics professor. Praised by the Guardian, the Observer and the New York Times, it stands alongside classics of grief writing such as C.S. Lewis's A Grief Observed and Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking.
