Fire on the Mountain is a novella by Anita Desai, first published in 1977 and winner of the Royal Society of Literature's Winifred Holtby Prize. Nanda Kaul, an elderly widow, has withdrawn to a quiet house high above the Himalayan town of Kasauli, seeking only solitude after a lifetime spent caring for others. Her carefully built peace is disturbed when her great-granddaughter Raka, a withdrawn and watchful child recovering from illness, is sent to stay with her for the summer. As the two circle each other through the long, dry months, old wounds and buried truths slowly surface, building toward a devastating climax as inevitable as the forest fires that threaten the hillside. Spare and lyrical, the novel is considered one of Desai's finest explorations of isolation, memory and the fragile bonds between generations.
